Why the First 48 Hours Matter

Flu treatment is most effective when it’s started within 48 hours of your first symptoms. Antiviral medications work by limiting how much the virus can multiply, so the sooner you start treatment, the more they can shorten your illness and ease your symptoms. If you’re feeling flu-like symptoms, don’t wait it out: getting tested and treated quickly is the best way to get back to feeling like yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Flu Services

The flu typically lasts one to two weeks, moving through a few stages:

  • Incubation (days 1-4 before symptoms): You likely won’t feel sick yet, but you may already be contagious.
  • Day 1: Symptoms begin — chills, muscle soreness, fatigue, headache, dry cough, and sore throat.
  • Days 2-4: Symptoms peak, and you’re at your most contagious.
  • Days 5-7: Fever and aches start to ease, though a dry cough may turn into a wetter one with more mucus.
  • Day 8 and beyond: Symptoms continue to fade.

You can be contagious even before symptoms start, with the most contagious period typically falling around days two to three. The CDC recommends staying home for at least 24 hours after your fever has resolved (without the help of fever-reducing medication) and your symptoms are improving.

Flu season in the U.S. generally runs from fall through spring, with activity often peaking between December and February.

Early fall is the ideal time, giving your body a few weeks to build immunity before flu activity picks up in your community.
